In the study, researchers found that the human brain more easily understands rhythm when it is carried by lower-pitched sounds, such as bass.

“Results from a biologically plausible model of the auditory periphery suggest that non-linear cochlear dynamics contribute to the observed effect.”

Listeners were more likely to tap their feet, dance, and respond rhythmically to songs with prominent bass lines than to songs driven by higher-pitched instruments like guitar or drums.

It is said that the most vital rhythmic information comes from the lowest voice, the bass.

A skilled bassist supports the band by providing a steady pulse and a strong foundation for every song. Most music that resonates with listeners depends on a solid rhythmic framework, and maintaining that responsibility falls largely on the bassist.

The study also found that listeners could more easily detect timing errors in low-pitched tones than in high-pitched ones, indicating better timing perception in bass frequencies.

The bass plays a powerful role in how people perceive harmony. When multiple notes are played at once, the human ear interprets harmony relative to the lowest pitch being played.

Participants in the study were played high- and low-pitched tones simultaneously, with one of the tones intentionally shifting off time. Listeners consistently detected timing errors more easily when the bass note was out of rhythm.
